[Portrait] Catherine Caillet, Research Engineer in eco-extraction of natural products within the GREEN team (UMR SQPOV)

What is your research about?

I am working on eco-extraction of natural products from plants within the GREEN team. These compounds have applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries... To carry out the extractions, I am looking for innovative processes, either through new technologiesor by using green solvents.

What are your current scientific activities?

I take part in scientific conferences and symposiums, in France and abroad. The next conference I will attend will be held in Croatia and will focus on the green extraction of natural products, where the research work of the GREEN team will be presented.
Also, a patent in which I participated, was submitted in July 2022.

Why did you choose to work in academic research?

After working for many years in industry, I had the opportunity to join an academic research laboratory. The thematic of the research activities proposed in the laboratory, the fact of being able to deepen the research subjects and thus acquire expertise were my motivations to work at the University of Avignon.

What advice would you give to students who want to do research?

Working in research requires you to be persistent, curious and open-minded. One should not be afraid of failure, the manipulations carried out in the laboratory do not always give satisfactory results!

What object or image from your business best illustrates you?

Nature offers us an infinite number of molecules, which are essential for our food and well-being. We must use them as a source of inspiration and continue to exploit them!
