Activities

The medievalists of Avignon include 5 teacher-researchers (2 PR and 3 MCF), 1 CNRS research engineer, 1 archaeologist and 1 contractual doctoral student. Their research fields cover the three disciplines of the laboratory: history, archaeology and medieval literature.
They participate in the laboratory's research activities, which are structured around five thematic axes and a transversal axis devoted to Digital Humanities.

The five main areas of focus are:

  • territories, margins and borders ;
  • power and authority in the East and West;
  • construction and communication of knowledge ;
  • writings, books, translations ;
  • people, goods and markets.

  • Research in history, archaeology and heritage, particularly in Avignon and the lower Rhône valley.
  • History of the papacy, the ecclesiastical institution and the papal archives.
  • History of medicine and health.
  • History of medieval nobility.
  • History of urban societies, institutions and cultures.
  • History of books and libraries.
  • French-language literature of the late Middle Ages.

Partnerships

  • Partnership with the Town Hall of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue: archaeological excavations; study of the Tour d'Argent island and the Saint-Andéol chapel in Velorgues.
  • Partnership with the PACA Region and the Grand Avignon in the framework of the ANR Pavage.
  • Agreement with the Archives Départementales de Vaucluse and the Ecole française de Rome.
  • Collaboration with the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille, as part of the drafting of its strategic development project.
