Jostled by danger, our hearts race, supplied with oxygen by heroic mitochondria. But these same mitochondria can wreak havoc during a heart attack. However, a glimmer of hope is emerging with organ transplants, a medical revolution in the making. And now, enter the captivating world of mitochondrial transfer: a new first for regenerative medicine, full of promise and exciting discoveries.

Mitochondria at the heart of stress

Cyril REBOUL (Professor at LAPEC)

What happens when we have to respond to a dangerous situation? The heart starts beating faster to increase the oxygen supply to our muscles and enable us to react quickly. The mitochondria (the organelles responsible for energy production) play an essential role in providing the energy needed for the heart to beat. However, this little organelle has a "right to life or death" over the cells. The mitochondria are therefore also responsible for the heart's suffering during a heart attack. We will look at the special role played by mitochondria in the functioning of the heart.

Come on, let's swap mitochondria!

Antoine GRANDPERRIN (Lecturer at the LAPEC)

Organ transplants represent one of the major advances in medicine worldwide. However, the technical and logistical complexity of transplantation has prompted researchers to develop alternative methods. Recently, the transfer of mitochondria (organelles responsible for energy production) has been developed, with very promising results in humans. This technique involves isolating 'healthy' mitochondria and sending them to the rescue of a suffering area. Join me to find out more about this scientific breakthrough and its possible applications.
