Biography

Professor at Avignon University since 2003, Paola Ranzini is a specialist in theatre (dramaturgy, aesthetics and stage practice in Europe from the 18th to the 21st centuries). She is a full member (elected) of the CNU (Section 18), a member of the board of the Société Française d'Etude du Dix-huitième Siècle (SFEDS) until 2023, and a member of the scientific committees of a number of journals (ItineraUniversity of Milan,  Il castello di Elsinore, University of Turin,  Colección Mnemosine Atlas Escenográfico, Complutense Madri University,  Scritture Migranti, University of Bologna, Synergies Portugal ) and specialised collections ("Sediziose voci. Studi sul melodramma", LIM -Lucques; "Teatro", LED - Milan; "Letteratura e altre Arti", Universitalia - Rome; "Ricerche IULM. Comunicazione, arti e media", Mimesis -Milan; "Quaderni di Gargnano" and "Le fonti dello spettacolo teatrale", Bulzoni-Rome), she is currently editing for CuePress (Imola, Italy) the complete Théâtre de Marivaux in Italian translation (four volumes published 2021-2024, three volumes in preparation) and is co-editor, for Classiques Garnier, of the Marivaux dictionary. At Avignon University, Paola Ranzini founded, in 2011, an International Master, double degree, Avignon University/University of Milan, co-directed a project co-financed by the European Commission (programme: Creative Europe) on the five senses in theatre (SENSES: the Sensory Theatre. New transnational strategies for theatre audience building, 2015-2018),. As part of the EN AgoranticShe worked on the design of a digital library for the performing arts, hosted by the EMAN platform (CNRS-ENS, ITEM, THALIM : http://eman-archives.org) : SEM (Scènes européennes Marivaux). A senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France, IUF (class of 2020), she has created an international network around her project Cultural transfers and show genetics. Marivaux on European stages. It has organised international colloquia in Florence (Teatro della Toscana): 2021 and 2022; in Athens (National and Capodistrian University of Athens): 2024, in Avignon (University and Maison Jean Vilar): 2025; in Valladolid (University of Valladolid): 2025 and in Lisbon (Art School): 2025. Thanks to this project, collaborations with directors have been set up and theatre productions have been produced: 2020-2021 : La Sorpresa dell'amore, directed by Paolo Bignamini (translation and adaptation by Paola Ranzini), coproduction CTB (Brescia)/ Pacta dei Teatri (Milan), Italy; 2020-2021 : El juego del amor y del azar, directed by Rafael Ruiz Álvarez, produced by La Función teatro (Granada, Spain); 2021-2022: La Seconda Sorpresa dell'amore, directed by Beppe Navello, co-produced by Ministero della Cultura (Italy) and Teatro della Toscana (Florence) ; La Colonia, directed by Beppe Navello, co-produced by Ministero della Cultura (Italy) and Teatro della Toscana (Florence); reading-performance by Το παιχνίδι του έρωτα και της τύχης (The Game of Love and Chance, trans. Andréas Staïkos) and Οι καλόπιστοι θεατρίνοι (Actors in Good Faith, trans. Andréas Staïkos), directed by Nikos Chatzipapas, on the occasion of the symposium in Athens (17 June 2024); 2024-2025: The Slave Island, based on the adaptation by Catherine Clive (1761), directed by Helen Landau, Avignon 2025, Théâtre de l'Archipel; reading-show by Elena Bezanilla, Pantzart Teatro Bilbao to coincide with the Valladolid symposium (4 June 2025); workshop-shows being prepared by Michel Cerda (ENSATT, Lyon) and José Peixoto (Art School, Lisbon) to coincide with the Lisbon symposium (30 June-1 July 2025). Various publications have accompanied the different phases of this research project. Since 2023, Paola Ranzini has been the principal coordinator of a Creative Europe research-creation project (CREA-CULT-2023-COOP-1) (Partners: Associazione Culturale PACTA Arsenale dei Teatri (IT) - Multicultural city e.V. (DE) - Libera Università di Lingue e communicazion IULM (IT): TraNET. This project, which focuses on the dissemination of multilingual theatre in Europe, includes the organisation of two Festivals (Avignon, Berlin, Milan). The first edition, Clashing Classics, will take place from 27 February to 6 March 2025. The new digital performance strategy of live multilingual surtitling and interpreting will enable spectators to become part of a virtual transnational audience, involved in a multilingual show and in a new multilingual European co-production. Paola Ranzini is currently supervising several theses in Theatre Studies, three of which have doctoral contracts.
