[HSTE Seminar] "Understanding PFAS pollution through the history of production and production workshops: Arkéma, an ongoing investigation" by Emmanuel Martinais

10 April : 15h00 - 17h00

HSTE Seminar - 10 April 2025

The next meeting of the History, Health, Work and Environment (HSTE) seminar is entitled: "Understanding PFAS pollution through the history of production and production workshops: Arkéma, an ongoing investigation". It will take place on Thursday 10 April from 3pm to 5pm, on the Hannah Arendt campus, in room 1E09.

We receive Emmanuel Martinais(EVS-RIVES/ENTPE University of Lyon), whose presentation is intended to give an account of an ongoing survey of pollution by poly- and perfluroalkylated substances (PFAS) in the south of the Lyon conurbation. Carried out as part of a number of combined research initiatives, this socio-historical survey consists of drawing up as accurate a picture as possible of the production history of the Pierre-Bénite industrial platform, with the aim of identifying and locating all the PFAS user and producer workshops (past and present), in a context marked by the invisibility of these multiple 'polluting entities' likely to be held responsible for the levels of contamination measured in the plant's immediate environment. After detailing the conditions under which this 'murky waters' survey was carried out and presenting some of its results, we will see how the production of knowledge about these industrial products enables both a critical analysis of the institutional responses to the PFAS crisis and a better understanding of the tensions at work locally.

The link to follow the seminar remotely will be sent to those registered before the session.
