UEO: instructions for use
The opening teaching unit (UEO) is a cross-disciplinary course that contributes to the Bachelor's degree. A UEO enables students to acquire 2 credits per semester, giving a total of 12 ECTS credits, which are essential for validation of the bachelor's degree.
Why choose a WEU?
Open teaching units (UEO) contribute to the individualisation of university courses. They open the door to other disciplines and encourage the acquisition of cross-disciplinary skills, thus contributing to your academic success and your integration into the world of work.
These cross-disciplinary courses are organised around major areas and themes such as individual or group project management, employment, creativity, sport, culture, teaching, languages, environmental awareness, equality, etc. They are offered by the university's various departments and components, and are open to all undergraduate students, unless specific prerequisites are indicated in the UEO/R catalogue. They are offered by the university's various departments and components, and are open to all undergraduate students, unless specific prerequisites are indicated in the UEO/R catalogue.
Each semester, undergraduates must choose one UEO, for a total of 6 UEOs over the course of the degree, in accordance with the syllabus.
Students enrolled on the Allure pathway may also choose one UEO per semester in addition to their Remedial Teaching Unit(s) (UER).
How do you choose your UEO?
Students are free to choose a UEO according to their interests, their course of study and their career plans.
However, before pre-registering, you must :
- consult the WEU catalogue.
While most of the EOUs offered are cross-curricular, i.e. accessible to all students, whatever their course of study, some EOUs are reserved for specific courses or levels of study, due to specific prerequisites.
For example, for language UEOs, a placement test must be taken before you pre-register for the level that matches your skills:
www.coe.int/fr/web/portfolio/self-assessment-grid?desktop=false
- ensure that their timetable is compatible with the time slot for the planned WEU.
Registration is online via the digital working environment (ENT):
ent.univ-avignon.fr
Double-click on 'administration' to access the 'Teaching and examinations' section of your student administration area. From the 'UE, UCE, UEO-CPRE pre-registration' tab, you must pre-register by selecting the teaching units for your semester, including one or two UEO maximum.
If you choose a Sport WEU or a Culture WEU, you must also pre-register for the desired sport or culture activity from the "Sports and cultural activities to choose from" tab.
If you fail to do so, your UEO Sport or Culture will not be taken into account.
Please note that some WEUs require prior consultation with the WEU course leader to check that you meet the conditions required to follow the course. You will not be able to pre-register from the ENT (capacity indicated at 0). It is therefore necessary to contact the WEU coordinator by e-mail to inform him/her of your enrolment request.
How do I unsubscribe from a UEO?
If your timetable changes or if you change your mind, and you can no longer or no longer wish to take a UEO, it is imperative that you withdraw from it as soon as possible. This will prevent the UEO from appearing as "not obtained" on your transcript at the end of the semester. It will also free up a place so that another student can take this course.
You can unregister directly via your ENT from your Espace administratif étudiant => Pédagogie et examens => Pré-inscription pédagogique UE, UCE, UEO-CPRE by simply unchecking this UEO if you have not yet sent your pre-registration to your Registrar (and to your Director of Studies for first-year undergraduate students). You can go back to your validated pre-registration as long as you have not sent it, until the registration closing date.
If you have already sent it, you will need to ask your pedagogical secretariat to give you back your pedagogical registration so that you can deregister and, if necessary, choose a new UEO.
Please note that after two absences from a UEO, it will generally no longer be possible to validate it, hence the importance of choosing the right UEO from the start of the course.
Who should I contact if I have any problems or questions about a WEU?
In the event of difficulty in pre-registering for a UEO (as for any other UE), your contact remains the course secretariat for your course. L1 students can also ask their tutor for help and advice.
If you have any questions about the content and organisation of a WEU (or sometimes also about enrolment when this is indicated on the WEU form), your contact is the WEU course leader, whose contact details are given in the WEU/R catalogue.
The reception desks of each of the UEO services (Maison de l'international, Maison de la culture et de la vie de campus, Relais handicap, SAFIRE and SUAPS) are also available to provide information on the UEO services they offer.
How to validate your UEO?
Whichever UEO is chosen, its validation and the awarding of the corresponding credits are conditional upon active and regular participation and the acquisition of the skills identified, in accordance with the assessment procedures specified at the beginning of the course.
A maximum of two UEOs per semester may be validated. However, only one UEO Sport and one UEO Culture per semester may be validated.

OEUs and remedial pathways?
Since the start of the 2020 academic year, the UEOs have also been included in the syllabuses for the university's preparatory courses for higher education (TREMPLIN Sciences and TREMPLIN Humanities and Social Sciences).
Remedial teaching units (UER) designed to help students succeed in their degree course are also offered to L1 students in the ALLURE programme. These courses, which are included in the UEO/R catalogue, are defined after consultation with the Director of Studies when the student success contract (CPRE) is drawn up. In addition to their UER(s), ALLURE students may choose one UEO per semester.
Did you know?
- The online timetable for each WEU (excluding Culture and Sport) can be consulted here : https://edt.univ-avignon.fr/ueo
The timetables for the Culture and Sport WEUs are available below at the beginning of the semester (see the "Culture WEU" and "Sport WEU" sections).
- In principle, OEUs take place over 12 sessions of 1.5 hours each, for a total of 18 hours. However, some OEUs may have a special format, with sessions grouped together over 2 or 3 days outside teaching periods (Master class cinema - Master class artistic process, Gender equality: prevention and management of violence) or take place according to the student's chosen availability (Tutors, High school ambassadors, AFEV commitment, Voluntary work placement, AED). Other courses are given entirely by distance learning (PIX 1 and 2 preparation, microeconomic analysis and business strategy) or in a hybrid format (Reading in English in the digital age: from page to screen - odd-numbered semesters).
- For students who are required to spend a long period abroad as part of their course (ERASMUS mobility, end-of-studies placement in LEA, etc.), it is important to anticipate the validation of two UEOs in the same semester in order to obtain the bachelor's degree (and the 12 UEO credits required).
- Most WEUs are open to staff, Masters and PhD students, subject to availability. Master's students may, depending on the course, benefit from a bonus for taking part in a UEO.
The WEU offer: catalogue
The UEO 2022-2023 catalogue brings together all the UEOs offered by the UFRs and university departments (including the Culture and Sport UEOs) for the 2022-2023 academic year.
It is essential to consult it before pre-registering for any course in order to be aware of any specific features of the planned WEU in terms of prerequisites, organisation, registration procedures, etc.

This offer also includes the remedial teaching units offered as part of the ALLURE pathways.
The terms and conditions of the UEO knowledge tests are approved by the Education and University Life Committee (CFVU) before the end of September. They can be downloaded here (cf. document to come after the CFVU vote in September 2022).
The terms and conditions for testing the knowledge of the UERs are also approved by the CFVU. They can be consulted directly on the ENT ("Pedagogy and Examinations" section, then "Knowledge and skills assessment procedures" tab).
