Research topics

History of the defensive policies and strategies implemented by the classical Greek cities, the Achaemenid Empire and the first Hellenistic kingdoms (Antigonids and Lagids). Particular interest is given to the peripheral regions of the Greek world (firstly the Eastern Mediterranean, then the Black Sea and the Adriatic), where cultural contacts and influences on urban planning, defensive strategies and territorial organisation are studied. Interest in construction techniques and the production of materials (bricks, ashlar) and, at the same time, in the preservation and enhancement of archaeological remains. Following on from my dissertation on the history of the defence of Cyprus from the Archaic period to the Arab invasions, and my post-doctoral research on the defence of Palestine during the Achaemenid and Lagid periods, my current research focuses on the evolution of defensive strategies in Ptolemaic territories outside Egypt (Cyprus, Syria-Phoenicia, Cilicia, Lycia-Pamphylia, Crete and Cyrenaica) through the analysis of archaeological (fortifications) and written (literary and epigraphic testimonies) sources, paying particular attention to the evolution of the maritime policy of the Lagid rulers.
