Biography

Benjamin Landais is a former student at the École Normale Supérieure and holds an agrégation in history. His dissertation, defended in Strasbourg in 2013, focused on the relationship between ethnicity and privilege in a rural society in south-eastern Europe in the eighteenth century, before the emergence of nationalism. He has been a lecturer in modern history at the University of Avignon since 2014 and head of the History Teaching and Research Centre since 2024. A specialist in the Habsburg monarchy, his current research focuses on peasant societies, administrative knowledge, migration and the history of cartography. He is currently involved in a collaborative study of land maps produced before the State geometric cadastres, linked to a research project on cartographic literacy in Ancien Régime Europe.
