Durability

A word from the Chairman

Our century is marked by the observation of a disruption of planetary balances, the magnitude and speed of which are having a profound impact on living organisms. These changes are directly linked to the organisation of our human societies and their exploitation of natural resources. The biophysical and societal components of the Earth system are intimately intertwined, as are the objectives of habitability, justice and equity. Offering everyone a life of dignity and fulfilment while respecting the planet's limits is the main challenge of the 21st century. Our institution is at the service of society, and therefore of the objective of ensuring a liveable and desirable future. The breadth of our skills and scope for action enable us to take action in a number of ways. Firstly, in the operation of our university campuses, with the requirement of exemplary public service, reinforced here by the view of our students: it is a question of aligning practice and discourse. Secondly, in our research activities, through our work and its impact on our immediate environment and society. Finally, in our training activities, because our students are living, are and will be confronted with a world undergoing profound change, which will affect them as professionals and as citizens.

The ambitious aim of our master plan is to structure our institution's contribution to this necessary transition to a sustainable society by proposing an overall vision and linking the courses of action that most often involve numerous players at the university. It marks a break with the way our university operates, with a commitment to a formalised and engaging approach. It invites the entire university community to appreciate the need to reinvent itself in the years to come, and also the urgency of changing our representations and practices, both individually and collectively, to ensure the sustainability of the environment in which we live, both locally and globally.
