What role did volcanoes play in Roman history? A study in environmental history

Since the 1990s, climate science has made it possible to estimate with increasing precision the impact of past volcanic eruptions on the climate and to link them to meteorological and agrarian disturbances. Some of these eruptions took place in Roman times, so can we see their effects in Roman history? From Cleopatra's Egypt to Justinian's plague, via the death of Caesar and the time of Marcus Aurelius, should volcanic forces be included in our history of Rome, and in what way?
