Lecture - Étienne Klein: "Why does physics contradict common sense?

1 October : 20h00 - 22h00

As part of the 20th anniversary of the Café des Sciences d'Avignon, on Wednesday 1ᵉʳ October 2025, Étienne Klein, physicist and philosopher of science, will present a lecture on the theme: "Where does it come from that physics contradicts common sense?".

"As we are consigned to a particular context - our planet and its immediate environment - there is every reason to believe that it is the right reference point for thinking, knowing, discovering and understanding. That it contains all the necessary and sufficient ingredients for identifying the most 'natural' laws of the world. But the 'real' laws of physics, the ones that apply universally, are not based on a bureaucracy of appearances, or an empathetic connivance with things. In fact, they are radically different from those we deduce from the world we see, or even from our simple physical experience.
That's why they seem so strange, so foreign, even paradoxical.
