Café des Sciences: "From research to society, AI everywhere? Why?"

23 May: 8.30pm - 22h30

"From research to society, AI everywhere? Why?"

A science café prepared by doctoral students from the University of Avignon.

Thursday 23 May from 8.30pm at the Restaurant "Chez Françoise".

6 Rue du Général Leclerc, 84000

"Artificial Intelligence", "AI", a name that resonates with the futuristic visions of the 1940s brought to life by Asimov and his laws. Since then, the Terminator, The Matrix and Black Mirror have fuelled imaginations around this new tool.

A tool. No more, no less?

A tool now available to everyone. Student looking for inspiration for a homework assignment? Company directors looking for a new logo to represent their values? Or why not a researcher in search of ever more effective analyses?

Every year, advances in this field have a greater impact on research.

But why? To what extent? And at what cost? This Café des Sciences is an opportunity to question our relationship with AI through the eyes of researchers and institutions who are themselves using this complex machinery. But what can we do when computer science is not part of our field of expertise? And how do we make it our own? All the while maintaining a critical scientific distance.

This café is a golden opportunity to question our relationship with tools.

Speakers:

  • Raphaël Minguet is a doctoral student at Avignon University (IMBE and INRAE). His research focuses on the use of bioacoustics to study bird populations in orchards in relation to agricultural practices. He uses AI to recognise birdsong.
  • Malo Maisonneuve is a doctoral student at the Avignon Computer Science Laboratory. Malo is working on the analysis and restoration of speech using AI following diseases that can impair speech.
  • Pierre Aumont is an engineer in the Research and Innovation Support Department at Avignon University. Pierre is the designer of the website : https://beercan.fra tool for disseminating and intelligently using AI.
  • Yannick Estève is Director of the Avignon Computer Laboratory (LIA) at Avignon University. He is a professor of computer science, specialising in the development of AI, and speaks to the general public about the subject (Understanding artificial intelligence and its challenges).
