The Institut Supérieur des Techniques du Spectacle

As a centre for continuing education in performing arts techniques, ISTS is aimed at stage practitioners, permanent employees of performing arts companies and local or temporary technicians. ISTS offers higher diploma courses and short advanced training courses. ISTS also offers :

  • Diagnostic and advisory services for project design
  • A documentation and information centre for live performance techniques and training courses
  • To be a forum for reflection on the practice of technical professions in the entertainment industry

  • Since 1994, the City of Avignon has provided ISTS with premises in the historic Saint Louis cloister.

The Ecole Supérieure d'Art d'Avignon

Founded in 1801, the Ecole Supérieure d'Art d'Avignon has established itself as a forum for artistic and theoretical debate. It is based on :

  • Paying attention to the works: creating, establishing, showing, receiving, documenting, conserving, restoring and reactivating
  • Performance, multimedia writing and contemporary issues

Jean Vilar House

Run by the Association Jean Vilar with the support of the French Ministry of Culture, the Maison Jean Vilar benefits from partnerships with the City of Avignon and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Its mission is to promote the work and thought of Jean Vilar by comparing them with contemporary performing arts through :

  • Thematic or monographic exhibitions
  • Meetings, readings, shows, debates, etc.
  • Publications including Les Cahiers Jean Vilar

  • A library of 30,000 titles, a branch of the BNF
  • A video library of some 1,000 titles devoted to the performing arts
  • 2 projection rooms
  • 30,000 visitors a year
  • 13 permanent staff (5 Association, 4 seconded municipal staff, 4 BNF)

The Charterhouse of Villeneuve-lez-Avignon

La Chartreuse is a national centre for performing arts writing, and an emblematic venue for contemporary theatrical writing. As well as being a venue for residencies, it is also a cultural centre for encounters, with the following main objectives:

  • Putting into perspective the evolution of show writing
  • To be a platform for exploring and clarifying the issues and forms of new writing
  • Organise a dialogue between creation and cultural memory

Key figures :

  • In 2008, the Chartreuse supported 30 authors in individual residencies and 30 theatre and choreographic companies.
  • 3 types of residencies: author residency, research and experimentation residency, design and writing residency
  • A library housing over 4,500 works by contemporary French and foreign authors

The Greater Avignon Regional Conservatory

The Conservatoire à rayonnement régional is a centre for amateur teaching and practice, as well as for professional training in theatre, music and dance. It has a dual vocation:

  • To create an artistic centre with a regional reach, focusing on learning, creation and the dissemination of the disciplines taught.
  • Broadening access to culture by opening up to as many people as possible
