Transforming voices in theatre: why?

When you start to create the sounds for a show, you realise the extent to which the choices you make can influence the audience's perception. The power of sound lies in the way it acts surreptitiously, sometimes unconsciously, on the emotions, sensations and imagination. The voices of actors are no exception to the rule. Why choose to broadcast their voices through microphones, and what effects can this mediation have with the sound tools available to the theatre today?

Speech is a highly complex phenomenon which, when coupled with the voice, is used to transmit a large amount of information - linguistic information directly linked to the 'message' to be addressed to an audience, paralinguistic information linked in particular to the person's emotional state and, finally, extra-linguistic information that provides information about the person's identity, personality or pathological state, etc. We will see how automatic systems based on 'voice' recognition analyse these different elements in order to understand and respond to human intentions.
