20 May: 7.30pm - 21h30

Tuesday 20 May 2025
Doors open: 7.15pm
Start of the evening: 7.30pm
End of the evening: 9.30pm
Location: The Pipeline, 34 Cours Jean Jaurès
84000, Avignon

This evening, let's explore the world of plants!
Mathematics, botany and creativity will all be on hand to help you better understand plants and their dynamics over time.
In our research, we build models of plants that are familiar from our plates in order to explore a multitude of scenarios in the field. We study plants and try to simulate their development using mathematics to improve their cultivation. We hope to pass on to you that the model is a top tool.

The secret of asparagus
Adèle SAHUT (Doctoral student - INRAE)
What is a plant model? What's it for? Let's start the expedition by discovering the work being done on a thesis in Avignon on the modelling of... asparagus! We'll take a look at how this project came about and what it involves. You may be surprised to learn all the secrets that this plant still hides today, even for those who have been growing it all their lives. Do you even know what asparagus looks like? No, not the stalk of asparagus you find on the market in spring, but the green bush with the golden flowers that open in summer.

The mystery of the tomato
Dario COSTANTINESCU (Researcher - INRAE- PSH)
In this journey through biology and models, we put a mathematical magnifying glass on the hidden world of the tomato. A bit like plant detectives, we explore its cells and the way it grows thanks to the substances sent by the plant to which the tomato is linked! Imagine a network of pipes and membranes, designed to store water and sugars, transform them, and give birth to the tomato we find in our salads or on a pizza.
