"Science popularisation: the YouTube revolution?

Since 2011, YouTube has played an increasingly important role in the popularisation of science. For researcher Alexandre Moatti, this is a veritable social phenomenon. In addition to the fact that YouTube is transcending the boundaries between media, it is the traditional format of popularisation that is being called into question. The unidirectional discourse hitherto proposed, from scholars to laymen, is being abandoned in favour of a horizontal, interactive and participatory approach. This new medium is mobilising its own codes (humour, the unusual, emotion) and references borrowed in particular from pop culture. It is positioning itself with some success in a niche left vacant by other popular media, that of young adults (aged 18 to 34).

A dual process of desacralisation and democratisation of access to science and technology is underway, and this raises questions about the legitimacy of the discourse. But how is this new form of mediation being developed? How does it constitute a media revolution? How does it fit in with the more general development of digital communication? How does it work, and to what logic does it respond?

Come and discuss it with (real) videographers and communications researchers who are studying this phenomenon.
